To impact teacher education assessment by advocating for authentic assessment conversations among internal and external stakeholders, in order to support high-quality assessment practices across North Carolina.
About NCTEAN
The North Carolina Teacher Education Assessment Network (NCTEAN) exists to connect and support individuals with teacher education assessment responsibilities, to promote the sharing of ideas and dialogue among members and other educators, and to link members to assessment resources.
The NCTEAN group is comprised of professional educators, across both public and private educator preparation programs in North Carolina, who have an interest in assessment and accreditation. We provide a network for members to discuss related issues and provide assistance to one another when questions arise.
The network began in 2007, under the leadership of Renee Corbin (WCU), Abdou Ndoye (UNC Wilmington), Comfort O. Okpala (NC A&T), and Emily Stephenson-Green (UNC Charlotte), as the Statewide Assessment Network, an informal group of UNC System assessment directors and coordinators who wanted to collaborate on assessment efforts. During the first years, the network developed a List Serv, and website and held its first virtual conference. As the informal organization grew, it also attracted the attention of private teacher preparation programs.
In 2010 the name was changed to North Carolina Teacher Education Assessment Network (NCTEAN). The network has always been open to all persons interested in assessment, and there has never been a fee to join.
Since 2008, our group has participated yearly in the NCACTE Fall Forum and focused on state and national assessment and accreditation issues of interest. During the summer of 2015, NCTEAN held its first drive-in conference, Assessment Horizons 2015, in Asheville. Assessment Horizons 2016 was held as a pre-conference in conjunction with the NCACTE Fall Forum in Raleigh, NC.
After 9 years as an informal network, NCTEAN felt the timing was appropriate to go one step further and formalize our network into an organization. A planning team met in July, 2016 to discuss structure options. After exploring the idea of establishing an independent non-profit, the planning team examined the missions of NCACTE and NCTEAN and felt there was a good match between the two organizations. Based upon this decision, NCTEAN requested to become a Special Interest Group (SIG) under the NCACTE umbrella. By-Laws were drafted as a first step in defining ourselves as a SIG.
On July 15, 2017, NCTEAN was approved as NCACTE’s first Special Interest Group.

NCTEAN Becomes NCACTE’s First Special Interest Group
Connecting Individuals, their Challenges, Ideas, Issues and Resources to Support Assessment Work across North Carolina.
On July 15, 2017, the NCACTE Board voted to accept NCTEAN as its first Special Interest Group (SIG). As a SIG, NCTEAN will be a community within the larger organization with a shared interest in assessment issues and learning, and we may also choose to communicate, meet, and organize conferences together. The Assessment Horizons 2017 Pre-Conference and Assessment Forum hosted by NCTEAN at the 2018 NCACTE Fall Forum is a good example of the working relationship. NCTEAN will continue to have its own identity and organizational structure, including by-laws and a formal steering committee.
